Examples of Student Work For The Sunwise June 2000

Examples of Student Work For SunWise 1999

As a part of their SunWise unit students at Morrison Labs mapped out the shade at their school. They took a shade inventory and made a map to show high risk areas, areas with high student use and little protection from the sun. They also noted the different types of shade available at the high UV times of the day.

Recently morrison labs visited Disneyworld on vacation, As Disney opens the Animal Kingdom park at Disneyworld each day they have a ceremony with a few of the characters. Minnie and Mickey Mouse have sunscreen at the top of their list. Disney gets an "A+" for promoting sun safety!

At Disneyworld's Epcot Center the workers and guests have shade protection throughout the park.

Consumer Reports on Tanning Beds

http://www.wsj.consumerreports.org/wsjreport63.html

"Oh Goodie I can't wait to have all of these!"

* wrinkles

* brown age spots

* blotchiness

* leathery, sagging skin that looks older than it is

Yes you can have all these and skin cancer too just by tanning your skin!

Tanning of any kind from any source can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. No matter what the tanning salons claim, tanning damages your skin, causes premature aging of the skin and can have many serious health consequences!

"The message is, 'A safe tanning bed is like saying there is a safe cigarette. It doesn't exist,'" says Shelley Sekula-Rodriguez, an assistant dermatology professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. " ...If a person wants to add color, they should use sunless tanners in a bottle. They are very safe."

This is a fun site with animated cartoons featuring Sungard Man. It has many teacher and student resources such as a sun safety Powerpoint presentation on sun safety, a sun survey and quiz, and many more projects. The program is aimed at middle school, but could be adapted to upper elementary and older.

Thanks Sanoe Lake!

Morrison labs gives Sanoe's new book Surfer Girl: A Guide to the Surfing Life two BIG thumbs up. This is a great book for anyone to that wants to know about surfing. Sanoe has a fun way of writing that uses humor, great illustrations, pictures, and most importantly SCIENCE to teach you all about surfing. She even has a Surfer's Molecule. Maybe this newly discovered surfer's molecule could get her nominated for a Nobel Prize in chemistry!

This book is very fun to read and I learned a lot about surfing. Anyone would enjoy it!

Below are pictures of some of the things she signed.

http://www.surfergirlthebook.com/

Recently actress, author, model, and professional surfer, Sanoe Lake visited our school to talk to our students about her new book Surfer Girl. She was very kind and generous spending hours talking to our students and signing her new book. Sanoe starred with Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez in the movie Blue Crush.

On pages 43-47 of her book Surfer girl she has valuable information about protecting your skin from the harsh effects of UV energy of the sun while surfing.

Thanks Sanoe Lake :)

"Can a girl be cool while taking precautions to avoid the sun? YES. Trashing your skin isn't cool. Lotion before the ocean, honey."

Sanoe Lake

Taking care of your skin should be a top priority for everyone. In her book she says she is a fanatic about protecting herself. As a surfer Sanoe gets tons of sun and applies a maximum sunblock SPF 50. She makes a point to wear sun protection for your eyes, use hats while out of the water. Seek shade when ever possible.

Thanks Sanoe Lake :)
