The Air Car Project

The Air Car Engineering Project Goals:

1. Be able to explain how your air car shows each of Newton's

three laws of motion.

2. Be able to identify areas where friction occurs with your car.

3. Be able to calculate the speed of your air car.

4. Be able to explain the velocity of your car.

5. To get your car to go the farthest distance possible by using critical thinking and good problem solving strategies. This also requires students to try different propeller designs.

6. To be able to follow directions carefully.

7. To be able to build something that moves.

9. To be able to explain how your car shows potential energy.

10. To be able to explain how your car shows kinetic energy.

Congratulations to Justin. His car was

the only one to reach the wall. The

hallway where we test is 19 meters long.

Students have one week, once their car

is completed to see how far they can get

their cars to go.

Justin's car and propeller.

19 meters is not easy to achieve considering Justin

was the only student out of 170 to do it.

Congratulations Justin!

Students build their cars out of common every day things like paper clips, paper, masking tape, straws rubber bands, file folder paper and index cards. I supply them with all the necessary supplies including a tray with wire cutters, pliers, scissors, rulers, compasses, and tape.

One of the challenges is to straighten paper clips for your axles and motor drive shaft.

Ciera works on attaching her wheels.

Students make precise mesurement to creat a motor mount.

Diana Rolling up her car body out of one sheet of legal size paper.

To add strenght to the car's body we roll a couple of pencils inside the paper.

Kristi uses patience and concentration to complete her next step.

Students have fun making modifications to the basic design. Is this the next tourbo car of the future?

Getting the cars to move takes patience, a good propeller and precise building. Katrina starts testing out her car.

Getting them to move in a straight line is a very tough challenge. The hallway is narrow and the cars always seem to be attracted to the side wall. D'oh!
