The Physics of the Olympics

Michelle Kwan Gets Ready For Her Competition

Students in my classes studied how the laws of motion can be used by Olympic athletes to allow the athlete to do jumps, spins, and many other types of movement. We concentrated on learning about the Law of "Conservation of Angular Momentum" because the ice skaters use this law to do many of their spins and jumps. By getting a better understanding of the science behind the skating, students will be able to appreciate the sport even more.
